Chapter Seven
âYouâre going to do just fine.â Sloan took Gregâs wifeâs hand in his, patting it reassuringly. Janeâs eyes were bright with excitement as she lay on the gurney in the hospitalâs outpatient surgery center, not a single iota of anxiety marring her brow.
âYouâre going to do fine,â Greg parroted.
It was plain to see that it was Greg, and not his wife, who needed comforting now that Jane was just about to undergo laser surgery. But Sloan went through the motions of crooning to the patient, for his partnerâs sake. Heâd work on assuaging Gregâs fears once Jane was in the operating room.
Jane had called Sloan last night and asked him if he could be available, not to support her, but to support her husband, during her surgery. Sloan had chuckled understandingly and promised Jane heâd be there to hold Gregâs hand. Sloan was finding that, even though the two of them had been married only a short time, Jane knew her husband well. Anxiety fairly snapped and sparked from Greg as he stood by his wifeâs side.
Just then Janeâs gynecologist approached, greeted them all in an upbeat and positive manner, and ushered Jane off into the operating room.
Gregâs clouded gaze followed them. âYou really think sheâll be okay?â
âOf course.â Sloan draped his arm around his friendâs shoulder, gently spinning him around. âLetâs go have a cup of coffee in the cafeteria while we wait. Before you know it, theyâll be calling you to sit with her until sheâs alert enough to be taken home.â
The man allowed himself to be led away from the O.R. corridor. âYouâre right.â His quiet tone was preoccupied, spoken almost to himself. âSheâll be fine.â
Sloan suppressed a smile. Doctors were towers of strength for their patients. Being so was part of the job. Nearly every day of the week, he watched Greg bolster the people who sought him out for medical help. But when a member of a physicianâs family became ill, had an accident or needed surgery, the tower of strength quickly crumbled on its foundations. It was the emotional connection that detached a doctor from his or her normal professional objectivity.
Times like this called for friends who were willing to lend support. And Sloan was happy to do whatever he could to shore Greg up in this trying moment. Heaven knew, Gregâand Travis, too, for that matterâhad certainly been there for Sloan when Olivia had been so ill.
âNot only will she be fine,â Sloan said, âbut once she heals, you two can look forward to getting yourselves pregnant.â
This comment caused Greg to grin. He rubbed his abdomen. âDonât think Iâll look too attractive being big as a barn.â
âYou might not,â Sloan agreedu. âBut Jane will glow. And if you make that barn comment in front of her, just make sure youâre ready to fend off the smack sheâs going to give you.â
Greg laughed, nodding acceptance of the advice. Then his gaze grew serious. âI donât have to tell you how important this is to Jane.
